Gravensteen Castle
Gravensteen Castle - One of the top attractions in Ghent is the wonderfully restored 12th century Gravensteen Castle. Gravensteen is the Dutch name for the "Castle of the Counts" and was constructed by Count Philip of Alsace around 1177 AD. The castle(s) functioned as the center of power for the Count in each city where they were built - Gravensteen is the only one of these that has remained largely intact. Visiting the castle today you will find room after room of perfectly restored medieval artifacts, a museum and exhibits that portray "castle life" in the middle ages. You will also get a stunning panoramic view of Ghent from the top of the castle walls.
